Last May, I had a meeting about doing a uniform project for a new school. I walked in thinking this was another research assistant job, l walked out quite surprised and kind of terrified about the impact my designs would have on the students and the school at large.
Uniforms are an integral part of a school’s identity; I hope that with this first iteration I have created an inclusive design that has instilled the school’s vision to create a community of agile learners who are bold, resilient and kind. The uniforms also reflect so much of myself with through my love for timeless fashion, good design & the importance of receiving a diverse education.
The vision I had for these uniforms is now reality. I’m still in awe of the trust I was given to lead the co-design process and be part of decision making moments. The FVSSC leadership team completely welcomed and were excited by my ideas, through co-design they had so much ownership and ensured that every adjustment to the uniform we discussed was executed.
Thank you FVSSC & QUT for entrusting this project to me. My heart is still bursting from seeing the students in their uniforms and all the wonderful feedback I received from the school community. To my colleagues, students, family & friends who told me to get over my self-doubt and do the work; I’m always so grateful for your support.
I could not think of a better project to be part of, let alone the first of my academic career. I hope that the uniforms will continue to look good and the framework I created will provide room for the school and students to explore and express their identity.
