The Healthcare Excellence AcceLerator (HEAL) is a collaboration hub, co-led by the QUT Design Lab and the Healthcare Improvement Unit at Clinical Excellence Queensland.
HEAL is designed to act as a bridge between the QUT design and innovation community and Queensland Health, accelerating healthcare improvement efforts across the state.
PPE for Paediatricians
As part of her MPhil program Isabel completed a HDR Internship. The project she completed looked at co-designing child friendly Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). PPE has become ubiquitous in 2020 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Yet, PPE can be scary, unfriendly, and confronting for children. Working with Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital, this project aims to develop less frightening PPE for the staff to wear, so that the children they interact with are less afraid.

Using digital manufacturing to design out diabetic foot problems in regional Australia
This research, currently in the preliminary stage, is investigating the possibilities to improve podiatry services, particularly for diabetic foot disease (DFD), in regional Australia. There is a projected doubling of the rate of diabetes in Queensland – the fastest-growing chronic health disease in rural and regional areas and Indigenous areas, with the related problems of diabetic foot disease. In Mount Isa, almost a quarter of the population identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and many have foot issues, where the focus is on the management of high-risk feet, predominantly due to DFD.
